Things that are Not Medieval, Vol. 1

I just learned today that Regretsy, one of my favorite websites, is hanging it up after three and a half years of whimsicle fuckery. Well in honor of them and their “Things That Are Not Steampunk” series, I’d like to offer some discoveries I’ve made while browsing the “Women’s Medieval/Fantasy Costumes” tag at the good ol’ Second Life Marketplace.

And so, without further ado…

this is not medieval

Now, I understand that “fantasy” is pretty broad and can certainly cover a lot of fictional ground. But… come ON.

“Medieval” refers loosely to that period in history between the fall of the Roman Empire (around the 5th century) to the dawning of the Renaissance (the turn of the 17th century). Where that line lies is the subject of much debate, but for most intents and purposes, we can all pretty much agree that it falls before the 17th Century.

That in mind…

(Actually, May’s Soul was such an offender in this category that I was hard pressed to decide what to feature. See for yourself if you like.)

What’s four hundred more years among friends?

This is really rather pretty. It’s just Regency-era at the earliest, which is 19th century.

Here’s another that’s really quite pretty. But it’s Baroque (late 18th). I would have let it go as “fantasy” except that the seller actually calls it “medieval”.

I think those will hold you over for now. Until next time!
