“…I do not think it means what you think it means.” –“Inigo Montoya”, in The Princess Bride
I got an IM that I want to address further, because I think it’s a question on more than one person’s mind. This one person just had the guts to ask it first. She asked me why my pub is having Family Night in a Mature sim, and isn’t that forbidden?
Short answer: it’s most certainly not a big no-no, nor is it expressed as being forbidden in any way. Nowhere is it written that teen and/or child avatars are ONLY permitted in PG sims, at least that I’ve seen. If I’m mistaken, show it to me. I know it’s nowhere in the covenant of the estate I rent on, and I know that the Wiki says ANY age avatar that is used by an age-verified adult is permitted in any rated region, including the adult continent of Zindra (excepted of course by personal policy of private landowners).
I think part of the confusion may come from the common fear/stigma that surrounds child avatars. Some people are clearly creeped out by them, for whatever reason, and one of SL’s very few hardcore bannable offenses involves sexual “ageplay” with child avatars. Because of this, I think people get overly cautious as to what is or isn’t kosher regarding child or teen avs.
So please allow me to reiterate: there is absolutely nothing wrong nor forbidden about having an all-ages “family night” in a Mature sim.
There also seems to be a bit of a confusion as to what is meant by the different ratings of regions. In SL, there’s PG, there’s Mature, and there’s Adult. Or, if you have Viewer 2 (*ptui*) there’s General, Moderate, and Adult. More detailed info can be had here, but to sum up:
- General/PG areas are for things you’d be comfortable with saying or doing in front of your grandmother. Examples may include public parks, classrooms, churches, or RL business conference areas.
- Mature/Moderate areas are mixed content, but don’t publicly promote explicit adult content. So a town that’s generally safe for all-audiences in terms of shops and businesses may have residential areas with sex beds behind closed doors; therefore it would get a Moderate/Mature rating. This is squarely where my pub would fall. I often think that day-to-day RL areas fall under such a rating, such as restaurants or shops. When adults meet they may talk about adult things, or use adult language, but it’s not like they walk around the supermarket buck naked or start going at it in the freezer section.
- Adult regions ” host conduct or display content that is sexually explicit or intensely violent, or depicts illicit drug use,” in the words of the Wiki. So a nudist beach may be borderline; it would probably be classified “Adult” to err on the side of caution.
But when it comes down to it, we are (or are supposed to be) all adults here in SL. And there is absolutely no reason, under ToS nor morally, why I can’t or shouldn’t have an all-ages Family Night in my pub.
That said, there is one. Tonight. At the pub. Come on by from 4-6.
