Come and hear live acoustic Irish & Scottish Traditional music today at the Green Dragon Inn in Northfarthing, as Northfarthing’s “house band” Cat Agus Cu takes the stage for an hour. Mistletoe (that’s me!) and RL husband Archimides Skytower will share with you their blend of drinking songs, jigs & reels, and cry-in-yer-ale ballads, all performed live. Be sure to bring your friends and join us at 3:30 SLT!

About the venue: Northfarthing is a non-Gorean medieval(ish) sim. Medieval/Renaissance/Fantasy garb, while greatly appreciated, is not required; wearing enough to cover what needs covering IS. Dance balls/machines are availble, along with limited seating.

Can’t make it inworld? You can catch us via stream at http://orange.neostreams.info:12958/ . Click “listen here” to listen via WinAmp, iTunes, or whatever music player you have.

Guys, this is my SL blog. I’m not interested in arguing about climate science here. There’s a great climate science blog out there; if you’re really that desperate for another beatdown, then go there. Meanwhile here you can piss and moan all you want, it won’t leave the moderation queue to see the light of day. Hell, I won’t read more than the first line or two. Go troll under someone else’s bridge.

PS: Thanks for driving up my stats. YTMND.

Yes, my RL hubby “Archimides” and I will be participating in Earth Hour. No, I don’t have one of those groovy plugins for my blog saying so (“Did she just say…’groovy’?!”). I apparently am not yet tech savvy enough to figure out the world of Plugins for WP, though I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before I get it.

Earth Hour, for those of you who aren’t aware of it yet, begins at 8:30 PM your local time. For one hour, everything electric that isn’t absolutely essential (like refrigeration) gets shut off and unplugged. Unplugging is important, because even if you have items like your TV or computer shut off, it’s still consuming electricity while it’s plugged in (in fact, if you want to save tons on your electric bill, unplug your electronics when you turn in at the end of your day every day. Even just shutting off the power strip makes a huge difference).

Now, myself being of the elven persuasion, of course I’m thrilled at such a simple yet practical idea for helping to raise awareness about conservation. Conserving on electricity is a great way to help cut CO2 emissions, which contribute to global warming. It’s one of those things that makes us as individuals feel like we really can do something about it. And while we’re sitting quietly for an hour, we may also find ourselves inspired to do other things as well, or at very least, become more mindful about how much power we consume and practice lowering that.

I was going to spend my hour playing SL on my charged-up laptop, heh, but our router’s going to be unplugged as well. So what are some things you can do for Earth Hour, without SL?

  • Write, pen-to-paper, by candlelight. If it was good enough for Shakespeare it’s good enough for you.
  • Knit or crochet. This is only recommended if you’re skillful enough to do so in low light. Then again, they do have light-up LED needles and hooks now…
  • Sit down with the one you love and actually talk. Just talk. About stuff.
  • Read a book.
  • Play a game of chess or Trivial Pursuit.
  • Go outside and look at the night sky.

Here are some things you should not do during Earth Hour:

  • Perform surgery.
  • Play darts.
  • Paint your brother’s miniature gaming figures.
  • Try your fire-building skills indoors. Especially bad if you don’t have a fireplace.

Kidding aside, be careful that you don’t replace carbon dioxide emissions with carbon monoxide emissions. Camp heaters and stoves are meant to be used outdoors in well-ventilated areas, not in your house or apartment. Toxic fumes from such things can be fatal, and there’s no need to be a martyr here. Never burn charcoal indoors, even in a fireplace. Don’t use your gas stove to heat the house. Don’t run anything with a gasoline-powered engine indoors.

Instead, just sit tight, light a bunch of candles, unplug everything you can get away with unplugging, and relax. Enjoy the quiet for an hour. There’ll be time for SL drama afterwards.

PS: the graphic above is my own design. You can do what you want with it except make money off it. If you really want to get it on a shirt, visit my CafeShop to get it. Thanks.

OK, I think I know how I’m going to approach this. It just so happens that I’m in the early planning stages of an event myself, one surrounding May Day. So what I’m going to try and do is take you along with me through the steps and hopefully provide some insight into event planning.

Remember in elementary school, talking about the 5 W’s? What, Who, When, Where, Why, and the added 6th one How (the w’s just at the end of that one).

The first thing of course is to decide what you want to do. Read the rest of this entry »

The problem with throwing a surprise party is you can’t exactly ask ahead of time if the surprisee is going to be around at the time you are planning said party. “Hey, are you doing anything on Friday between 6 and 8? Oh no reason, just asking!”

Well, I was reminded of this the hard way last Friday night, when I threw a surprise pirate-themed birthday party for DonPaul. SURPRISE! No DonPaul! HA! So, well, we had cake and rum and dancing anyway. Here’s some pics of what the birthday boy missed.

Shaun was clearly giving him sheep eyes. This made DonPaul worry, wondering what the ramifications of such a look could be. He looked back, sheepishly. Shaun’s eyes seemed to say, “It’s ewe, and only ewe. My heart has been fleeced.”

I’ve been asked for a while to do this, and I’m not quite sure how I’m going to approach it. We’ll see I guess. Hello and welcome to the first of who-knows-how-many posts on the tao of planning/organizing events. This is meant to apply in SL; however, probably many of the things I mention will probably work when applied to RL events as well.

To begin with, I’ll mention some of the Noble Truths of Event Planning. These are the things to keep in mind at all stages of planning your big event.

Thank EVERYONE who made today’s Spring Festival an absolute JOY. The only hitch we had was with the last-minute fireworks, which just didn’t end up happening. Every show was GREAT, the crowds were fantastic, we just all had a wonderful time. On to the pictures! (Click to see larger)
