I have been remiss in saying so, but chances are you’ve discovered it already. “Archimides” and I are away for the whole weekend to celebrate our fourth wedding anniversary. Chebeague Island in SL is pretty nice, but it is NOTHING compared to the real one!

I’ll be home on Sunday night. Enjoy the peace and quiet until then ;)

It’s Monday. It’s depressing. You’re down anyway, so why not commiserate with the original Elizabethan Emo Kid, John Dowland, all day today on Mistletoe Radio? That’s right, from 9AM-9PM Pacific, it’s all Dowland, all day.

This afternoon Archimides and I will be giving a performance in front of Princess Aislinn’s Castle in Northfarthing, to break in the new stage I built and the new benches that Letia Gothly built. We’ll do our more “courtly” set today: medieval and renaissance dances with a couple pretty songs added for your enjoyment. I do hope you can join us inworld; if not, you can also catch us on my audio stream (you don’t even have to play SL to hear!) by going here, firing up Winamp or iTunes, and clicking the link that says “listen”. The performance is roughly half an hour long. Hope you can come and enjoy!

“None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free.”
- Goethe

I took a commission project earlier in the week and I never shall again. I was approached by a couple of Goreans who wanted four veils to match with four dresses. The lady went on to explain to me that if “free” (quotes mine) women don’t wear veils in their culture, then they can be “stolen”.

The impression that I got of this whole Gorean business is that it’s a twisted mix of reverent worship for women (evidenced by the way her male partner kept calling her his princess) and subjugation of them. And there’s something decidedly familiar-seeming about it all…

I’m so glad you could stop by. I know I promised you tea yesterday but I just wasn’t feeling well. Our little dragon wandered off and Archimides and I were up half the night looking for him. So if I’m not my usual self, I apologize. Please, sit down. Make yourself comfortable. I’ll put the kettle on.

So I suppose you just want me to get right to the “good stuff”, don’t you! Ha ha, you’re nothing if not subtle.

Where was I? Oh yes, we met. Well that’s done, then. It’s not unusual for us fae sorts to have more than one partner, nor is it that unusual to pick one and settle down for the centuries together. I would venture to say it is maybe half and half. The former is much more rare in humans, I know, but I also know that it does exist and I DO hope you see the knowing glance I’m giving you. Well, up until meeting him, I was–and only wished to be–with one partner. Archimides and I made our vows and have been happily partnered for years. I guess I had some lingering belief from my time among the humans that if you desired another, it was because you were lacking something from what you already had. You know, not enough attention, not the right sort of attention, that kind of thing.

But I realized, rather suddenly, that that wasn’t so. It left me feeling very confused, even guilty. Of course I talked to Arch about it–we talk about all our worries–and speaking with him put a lot of things into perspective. For one thing, feeling guilty for thinking about having someone else is nothing for a woman to feel guilt for; it is what men do all the time! For another, I had no lesser amount of love or desire for my husband than before; if anything, those feelings were greater. And finally, I knew that what Arch and I had was something that can never be replaced. This is the man who played and sang for me when I was recovering from major surgery. This is the man who endured a lengthy dry spell due to illness. This is the man who held my hand and brushed my hair back from my face and let me cry when I learned I would always be sterile. I could never want him any the less; I could never wish to replace him.

So I came to understand that this desire was clearly not wishing to fill some kind of void in my life.

Ah! Saved by the whistle. One moment and I’ll return with the water for tea.
